Join us to take in the spectacular scenery, geological history, Aboriginal rock art and artefacts, impressive fossil remains and ruins of early European settlement of the Flinders Ranges.
Itinerary
Day 1 | Adelaide - Port Augusta | We will have an early start from Adelaide and head north on the Princes Hwy to Port Augusta. We will have lunch at the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens, and during the afternoon will be able to explore the gardens at leisure. Display gardens and plant collections utilise a wide variety of flora from the arid zones. Café and Garden/Gift Shop are available. Dinner will be at a local restaurant at own expense. Day 2 | Port Augusta - Balcanoona | From Port Augusta we will travel north to Leigh Creek and Copely, then east on the Gammon Ranges Road to Nepabunna, Italowie Gap, and Balcanoona. On the way, at Parachilna, we may be able to see some examples of ediacaran fossils, evidence of the earliest multi-cellular life on earth. Showers are available at the park HQ at Balcanoona. Day 3 | Balcanoona (Gammon Ranges NP) | Wortupa Loop Drive. This day we will have an interesting drive along the Wortupa Loop Track which will give us an appreciation of the geology, vegetation, and history of the Gammon Ranges NP. The Track passes through Weetootla Gorge, with its red gums and cliff faces, and provides great views. On the return journey, if time permits, we will walk along the Weetootla Creek track, as far as Weetootla Springs. While in the Weetootla area, we hope to see the Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby, and the Painted Dragon. Accommodation: Camp - Weetootla Campground BLD |
Day 4 | Balcanoona (Gammon Ranges NP) | Lake Frome. From Weetootla campground, we will drive back to Balcanoona and take the Lake Track out to the edge of Lake Frome; where we can explore the lake boundary, vegetation, and the alluvial fan of Balcanoona Ck. This is normally a dry salt lake, however on extremely rare occasions, Lake Frome can take overflow floodwater from Lakes Blanche and Callabonna, at the very end of the Cooper/Strzelecki flowpath. Day 5 | Balcannona -Arkaroola Wildlife Sanctuary | Early morning start today as we continue on to the Arkaroola Wildlife Sanctuary. This morning will be spent exploring the sanctuary. After lunch we will join the sanctuary’s Ridge Top Tour, one of the most scenic trips on offer anywhere with spectacular rugged and unique natural beauty. Day 6 | Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary - Blinman - Wilpena Pound | Today we drive south and head into the Southern Flinders Ranges with its stunning scenery and excellent wildlife spotting possibilities. The Flinders Range National Park is a photographers paradise. Accommodation: Camp Site - Wilpena Pound BLD |
Day 7 | Wilpena Pound | Today we explore the area around Wilpena Pound. After an early breakfast, we will take a walk to the Old Homestead and Wangara Lookout which provides panoramic views across the pound. After an early lunch, we will drive through Bunyerooo Gorge to Aroona Valley, one of Australian artist Hans Heysen’s favourite sites. Accommodation: Camp Site - Wilpena Pound BLD |
Day 8 | Wilpena Pound - Port Augusta - Adelaide | An early start this morning as we depart Wilpena Pound. We will spend time visiting Port Augusta and the Wadlata Centre, a great historical display based on the Lake Eyre region. Our adventure ends in Adelaide late this afternoon, where you will be dropped off at your chosen accommodation in the city. BL |
