Bhutan The Last Shangri-La Tour

Bhutan The Last Shangri-La Tour

Dear Travellers,

Sylvia and I recently returned from the UK where we spent three weeks enjoying some time with family and our 1-year-old granddaughter. Since arriving back, it’s been great to find that summer has also arrived back in Perth. The WA Christmas Tree (Nuytsia floribunda) is flowering, a sure sign that Christmas is around the corner, and our final Coates trip for the year, Christmas Island (very fitting) has also concluded. So, as December gets underway, I would like to wish you all a very merry and safe festive season!

Looking ahead to next year, I would like to invite you to the Kingdom of Bhutan. Journey with us to the “Land of the Dragon” to discover the stunning beauty of Bhutan’s Himalayan peaks, explore the many ancient dzongs (fortresses) and sacred temples, and visit pristine forests in some of the world’s last untouched wilderness. This 14-day trip from 27 April to 10 May 2025 is fully escorted with expert guides, and begins and ends in Bangkok.

This is a rare opportunity for an exclusive look at Bhutan’s stunning mountainous landscapes, unique culture untouched by modern tourism, and incredible wildlife like never before. Our small group of just 12 passengers ensures a personal, immersive experience, and alongside expert guides, you’ll have the chance to spot rare wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard and red panda, and experience the country’s rich flora, including over 50 species of rhododendron.

If you are interested in Sri Lanka (3 to 18 March 2025), I have a limited number of rooms remaining on our Wildlife, History & Culture Tour, so please get in quick to secure your place. From ancient ruins in Sigiriya to wildlife safaris in Yala National Park, this tour offers the chance to see leopards, elephants, and an incredible variety of birds. Led by top naturalist guides, you’ll also enjoy whale watching, cultural experiences, and stunning landscapes across this tropical paradise.

I hope you can join me out there.

Why Bhutan?

Known as “The Land of the Dragon,” Bhutan offers a peaceful and untouched sanctuary. It is one of the last strongholds of Tibetan Buddhism, where you can immerse yourself in the timeless culture and stunning natural beauty. Bhutan’s conservation efforts have helped preserve its diverse wildlife, including over 600 species of birds and rare animals like the red panda, tigers, and snow leopards. This is a country where nature thrives, and cultural traditions remain intact.

A Journey of Discovery:

Our tour begins in Paro, where you’ll have the chance to explore the National Museum, visit local markets, and enjoy stunning views from Chele La Pass. From there, we’ll travel to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, and visit ancient monasteries, majestic dzongs, and explore the tranquil landscapes of Phobjika Valley, Royal Manas National Park, and beyond.

This tour is designed to showcase the best of Bhutan’s biodiversity, with ample time for wildlife spotting, birdwatching, and exploring the country’s stunning scenery. From ancient temples and forest trails to remote valleys and snow-capped peaks, Bhutan is a haven for nature lovers and those seeking a retreat from the world’s hustle and bustle.
